On the first abduction mission, I always choose the option that gives me engineers, then build a satellite right after the mission. I start off researching weapon fragments for scopes, then go for beam weapons next. I typically play on C/I and typically play a more DPS oriented strategy. Although this build leaves XCOM short on funds (you'll only get 1 satellite up in March, and even buying it will cost 100 simoleons), and delays arc thrower, OTS, and foundry projects, I find that your vastly improved survivability/firepower is excellent compensation (although getting 12 engineers by the first April mission can be a challenge). If executed properly (and with a smidgen of luck), either Beam or Carapace will be done by the first April mission. I personally prefer a Laser/Carapace rush - get 4 scientists from the first abduction, and then get Meld Recombination and Material/Fragment research done by the first UFO appearance, and then switch to Beam Weapons (on Impossible) or Carapace Armor (Classic) when unlocked. What do you prioritize? Satellites? Research? Interrogations? OTS or Foundry upgrades? After Enemy Within drastically increased research times, it's become much more important for Commanders to have a plan when ordering construction and research.
